The goal of The Creative Curriculum® for Preschool is to help children become independent, self-confident, inquisitive and enthusiastic learners by bringing a hands-on approach to the interactive learning environment in which the children are immersed. The Creative Curriculum® for Preschool also aids the teachers in taking a closer look at each child’s unique abilities, interests and needs.
The Creative Curriculum® for Preschool approach balances both teacher-directed and child-initiated learning, with an emphasis on responding to children’s learning styles and building on their strengths and interests. It provides clear guidance on the teacher’s role in addressing content in literacy, math, science, social studies, the arts, and technology, yet never loses sight of the primary importance of social/emotional development in children’s learning.
The planned activities for the children, the organization of the environment, the selection of toys and materials, and planning the daily schedule and interaction with the children, are all designed to accomplish the goals and objectives of the curriculum. Our whole child approach also helps develop both academic skills and confidence as the children progress through the years.
The Creative Curriculum® for Preschool is built on the philosophy that young children learn best by doing. It is built upon theories of development in young children, that all children learn through active exploration of their environment and therefore the environment plays a critical role in their learning.
We believe in play-based, interactive learning. Our creative curriculum is based on these core principles.

At Hamilton Heights Child Development Center our curriculum is emergent, child-centered, and play-based. Teachers in our Preschool and Pre-K programs use The Creative Curriculum® for Preschool, by Diane Trister Dodge, Laura J. Coker, and Cate Heroman, to guide curriculum decisions in their classrooms.
The Creative Curriculum® for Preschool translates new research and theory from the field of early childhood education into a practical, easy-to-understand approach to working with children and their families. It is a comprehensive curriculum that includes a framework for decision making along with a focus on interest areas.
Hamilton Heights uses The Creative Curriculum® for Preschool as guiding principles and practices to show our teachers how to integrate learning in literacy, math, science, social studies, the arts, and technology throughout the day. It also gives our teachers a wide range of teaching strategies- from child-initiated to teacher-directed approaches- to best respond to children’s learning styles, strengths, and interests. This child-initiated and teacher-directed approach is also known as “Active Learning”, which is the belief that children learn best through active experiences with people, materials, events and ideas- which is a central belief of our curriculum’s approach for all age levels.
Since we believe that children learn best by pursuing their personal interests and goals, children at Hamilton Heights are encouraged to make choices about materials and activities throughout the day. As they pursue their choices and plans, children explore, ask and answer questions, solve problems, and interact with classmates and teachers.
Teachers will carefully observe each child in an effort to record their development and identify areas in need of guidance. Classroom curriculum includes a balance of large group interactions, small group interactions, and individual child choice time.
The space and materials in our classrooms are carefully selected and arranged to promote active learning. The Creative Curriculum® for Preschool is built around the environment using ten different interest areas or centers.
